Galway’s Best Breakfasts
They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day, which is why it’s important to choose the right venue for that early morning calorie fix. While we have a host of breakfast options at The Dean Galway, if you feel the need for seconds, we’ve compiled a list of the best breakfast spots in the city.
Ard Bia
Quite possibly Galway’s cutest café, Ard Bia has a breakfast menu to match the décor; expect everything from stuffed French toast with poached pear to the veggie Hippy Fry (poached eggs, mushroom, spinach, roast tomatoes, potato cake and spiced tomato relish). They are open for breakfast every day from 10am, and they also have a really cool shop selling a variety of plates, cups and bowls.
Address: The Long Walk
Gourmet Tart
Long a favourite of Galway foodies, this café-cum-bakery has expanded to six locations across the city, so you’ll never be far from a sweet (or savoury) option to tide you over. Everything is made in-store, so you are guaranteed freshness – we recommend the coffee cream éclair which is rather addictive, although you will probably need a Salthill stroll to work off those calories.
Address: Various venues across Galway
Cupan Tae
While this place is known most for its afternoon tea (it’s divine), it also does a rather scrumptious weekend brunch which consists of egg soldiers, tea of your choice, a mini pancake plate and a granola teacup, topped with Greek yoghurt and fresh fruit. Delish.
Address: 8 Quay Lane
Lohan’s Bar & Restaurant
Something of a mainstay among Salthill’s morning crowd, Lohan’s serves breakfast from 8am every day. Operated by the Lohan family, who are experienced publicans, the service here is top notch. As for what to order, we can’t look past the full Irish; just make sure to walk back to Galway to sweat off those calories.
Address: 232 Upper Salthill Road
Sophie’s Rooftop Restaurant
Eggs with a side of unbeatable views? Galway’s newest rooftop restaurant, Sophie’s, serves up a scrumptious and hearty breakfast seven days a week from 7am (8am on weekends), with brunch at the weekends and bank holidays from 11am. Savoury favourites include the Eggs Benedict, and if you’re feeling sweet you can’t go past the Buttermilk Pancake Stack with Orange Butter & Maple Syrup, divine!
Address: The Dean Galway, just off Eyre Square.
